Sometimes we think that we could be birds and can fly like them…but unfortunately we can’t fly.Birds are very lucky that they can go anywhere in the world without visa!!! Some of the nature’s best creations come in our little rann of kutch from across the globe. Isn’t it surprising? Well, it is true and that is because of the varied environment of the desert.
Total area covered is 4954 sq km and it is declared as Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary in 1972.Actually it is popular for the world famous Wild ass but tourists are attracted here to see the vast variety of birds also. The environment of desert is totally suitable for wild ass and that is the reason that the number of these animals are increasing since last few years.
In this desert some birds stay permanently and some visit during winter period.Basically, in summer the desert is languid and direful. In rainy days the landscape changes dramatically,when this sanctuary area is filled with shallow fresh water.This offers a vast feeding ground for famous greater spotted,steppe and eastern Imperial Eagles.
Here we can see many rare birds like Aquila Eagle,Dalmatian and great white Pelicans,montagu’s and pallid Harrier,Eurasian wigeons,Marsh Harriers,black eared kites,Egyptian Vultures,Herons,spoonbill,great crested grebe etc…Some birds easily spotted in big groups in the vast area of desert throughout the year.
In winter many international birds are attracted like houbara bustard, Dalmatian pelicans, hawks, montagu’s and pallid harriers and falcons.So, this desert becomes very colorful and live during winter.During the safaris in the Rann expect to see large flocks of larks, and other dryland birds like sandgrouse, coursers, plovers, chats, warblers, babblers, shrikes. Among the many winter visitors are the houbara bustard and spotted sand-grouse. It is one of the few places where harriers can be seen roosting on open-ground at night.
